Jun 9, 2025 | WFA News

Wilderness Foundation Africa’s Youth Development Programme strives to have a lasting impact on young people in South Africa, and Greg Jacobs is a shining example. His story is one of perseverance, personal growth, and the power of nature to inspire change. Through his experience with the programme, Greg leveraged opportunities which shaped his future, allowing him to build a career in conservation and give back to his community.

A Journey of Transformation

Greg Jacobs grew up on a farm in Cape Town before moving to Ashton in the Western Cape in 2019. It was there that he first learned about Wilderness Foundation Africa. Originally, he dreamed of becoming a long-distance truck driver, but when that path didn’t materialise, he explored various industries, including manufacturing, courier services, and agriculture.

His journey took a transformative turn in 2019 when he was accepted onto a Siyazenzela course in Robertson, funded by Graham Beck. As one of the highest achieving graduates from the course, Greg was selected to undertake accredited field guide training with the Wilderness Leadership School in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, at the beginning of 2020 – an opportunity made possible by an Umzi Wethu scholarship.

After qualifying as a field guide in 2021, Greg gained hands-on experience through an internship at Bontebok National Park, facilitated by the youth development team. His career as a guide quickly progressed, with placements at Amakhala Game Reserve, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve and eventually, Gondwana Game Reserve.

Over the past four years, Greg has also embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, successfully establishing two businesses in the ecotourism sector. His story is a testament to how Wilderness Foundation Africa empowers young people to create meaningful and lasting careers in conservation and ecotourism.

The Power of the Youth Development Programme

Greg’s journey began when was accepted onto Wilderness Foundation Africa’s Siyazenzela course. This short course equips young people with essential life skills, leadership training, and conservation knowledge, setting them up for lasting careers in the conservation and hospitality sectors. Greg immersed himself in the programme, embracing every challenge and learning experience that came his way. He took full advantage of the mentorship, hands-on training and personal development opportunities provided.

One of the most transformative aspects of the programme for Greg was learning to be in tune with nature. The experience of solitude in the wild helped him develop mental resilience, problem-solving skills and a deep respect for the environment. “The wilderness teaches you things you can’t learn in a classroom. It forces you to be present, to think critically, and to trust yourself.” He recalls moments of intense self-discovery, such as spending nights in the bush, navigating challenges on guided trails and learning the importance of patience, focus, and teamwork.

Greg also attributes much of his success to the programme’s entrepreneurial training, which broadened his perspective on how to create and sustain his own business. “I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur before, but the programme helped me see that I could take my passion for nature and turn it into something meaningful.” He developed the mindset of seeking opportunities, making connections and applying the practical skills he learned in the programme to his personal and professional life.

Where Is He Now?

Today, Greg is thriving in the conservation and ecotourism sector. He has built a career as a professional nature guide and has just launched his own environmental education business, focusing on nature education for children where he can instil his love for nature in his students and inspire future generations to protect it.

Beyond this, Greg remains deeply connected to Wilderness Foundation Africa. He actively gives back by mentoring new participants in the Youth Development Programme and guiding the wilderness trails. “I know what it’s like to be a young person searching for direction, and if I can help just one person the way this programme helped me, then I know I’m making a difference.” His commitment to conservation and youth development has made him a role model for others looking to follow in his footsteps.

Greg’s journey demonstrates how the Youth Development Programme can be a life-changing experience. It not only equips young people with practical skills but also ignites a sense of purpose and resilience that carries them through life’s challenges. His story is a testament to the power of opportunity, determination and giving back.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Greg’s advice to young people considering the programme is simple: embrace every opportunity, stay open to learning and be willing to challenge yourself. “If you put in the effort, the rewards will follow. This programme gave me the confidence to chase my dreams, and it can do the same for you.” He believes that the skills and experiences gained through Wilderness Foundation Africa can set anyone on the path to success—just as they did for him.

Wilderness Foundation Africa continues to transform lives by providing young people with the tools they need to build a better future . Greg Jacobs is one of the many success stories that we are incredibly proud of.
